The Personal Dimension of Leadership: The Transformation Story of Oleksii Severyn (Ekol Logistics)

From Department Head to Co-Owner: A Journey of Transformation

Every leadership story begins the moment a person decides to step beyond their role. For Oleksii Severyn, that moment came when he realized that managing people is not about control but about helping others grow. Since then, his career has become an example of how personal growth can transform an entire organization.

Today, Oleksii is the Commercial Director of Ekol Logistics, a company that specializes in logistics solutions and builds a culture of partnership and shared ownership. The path to this role was not linear — it required deep self-reflection, courage to challenge old patterns, and a constant desire to learn.
His studies at the Executive MBA program of KMBS became a turning point, shaping an ecosystemic mindset — the ability to see business as a living system where trust, relationships, and values matter as much as financial results.

The shift from head-to-head competition to coopetition — collaboration within competition — was a real mindset revolution. Instead of fighting for resources, Oleksii began creating opportunities for mutual growth.
Now, Ekol Logistics is entering a new phase: its top management is gradually becoming co-owners. This is not merely a financial decision but a philosophical one — when every person feels they are literally building the company’s future.

Leadership through Humanity and Trust

For Oleksii, leadership is not a toolkit or a job title; it’s a state of mind based on trust and humanity.
“My superpower is to see opportunities and create them for others,” he says. This ability lies at the core of his leadership philosophy. In his personal emblem, the symbol could easily be an eye — a metaphor for vision, awareness, and foresight.

He no longer fears mistakes — his or others’. What once felt like a threat to reputation has become an investment in experience. “A failure isn’t the end — it’s a moment of learning,” he emphasizes. Such a view creates a psychologically safe environment for experimentation and innovation.

Trust, for Oleksii, is not an abstract virtue but a daily discipline: it’s how he delegates, listens, and supports people in difficult situations. Humanity forms the foundation of his management philosophy: “A person is not a resource but a personality with unique talent that deserves to be seen and nurtured.”

The principles that define his leadership style include:

  • Trust as the foundation of all relationships
  • Openness and honest dialogue without fear of punishment
  • The right to make mistakes as a tool for growth
  • Integrity and consistency in decisions
  • A genuine desire to see others succeed

Within Ekol Logistics, a shared language of trust has emerged — a culture of feedback, openness, and mutual respect. This culture is not enforced by rules but built through example, when the leader is the first to admit mistakes and share lessons learned.

Building a Culture of Agency at Ekol Logistics

When a team becomes a co-creator of results rather than just an executor, a culture of agency is born — an environment where everyone can be a leader.
Ekol Logistics actively cultivates this idea: instead of rigid hierarchy, there are “co-architects” — people who design the company’s future together. Their role is not to control but to nurture, not to command but to inspire.

“We’re like gardeners tending to an ecosystem. If the soil is fertile, any idea can grow,” says Oleksii.
In this environment, mistakes are not shameful but informative — a signal for growth. Trust becomes the new currency of success.

Such a culture creates a unique balance between freedom and responsibility. People learn to make decisions independently, while leaders learn to let go of excessive control. That’s how true partnership and shared accountability take root.

Teaching, Mentorship, and the Power of the KMBS Community

Beyond his corporate role, Oleksii teaches the Transformational Strategy course at KMBS. He believes that meaningful business change is impossible without personal transformation. In class, he demonstrates that true strategy arises not from spreadsheets but from understanding people, context, and purpose.

His approach to mentorship resembles a “tandem on one bicycle”: the mentor doesn’t ride ahead but pedals alongside. This creates a partnership of trust where both grow together. For him, mentoring is not a duty but a way to “pass on the flame, not the ashes.”

Oleksii continues to learn himself — now studying at Polimi Graduate School of Management in Milan. He calls this phase “renewing one’s mindset”: to understand new generations, one must keep evolving personally.

Sources of inspiration that sustain his growth:

  • Continuous education in global business schools
  • Physical activity — 4–5 workouts per week
  • The KMBS alumni community that fuels shared purpose
  • Thought-provoking books such as The Prosperity Paradox by Clayton Christensen
  • Participation in creating Always Faithful, a book on military leadership for business

Within Ekol Logistics, the practice of “The Creators’ Circle” brings colleagues together to read, reflect, and integrate new ideas into the company’s strategy — bridging knowledge, culture, and leadership.

Balancing Roles: Business, Teaching, and Fatherhood

Being a leader in business is one challenge; being a father is another, often deeper one. For Oleksii, parenting his son has become a mirror reflecting his leadership style.
“A child is the most sensitive fairness detector — they instantly sense inauthenticity,” he says. That’s why he applies the same principles at home as at work: trust, openness, and respect for individuality.

Their shared hobby — playing the drums — is more than music; it’s a metaphor for rhythm, synchrony, and shared flow. “When we play together, I feel how our connection grows. It’s about partnership, not control.”
These moments give fatherhood its profound meaning: helping a child not just to listen, but to hear; not just to follow, but to create.

To maintain balance among business, teaching, and family life, Oleksii relies on discipline and physical resilience. CrossFit is his way to stay grounded: “Physical endurance is the foundation of mental stability. If you want a strong mind — move your body.” Regular workouts help him sustain focus even through intense workloads.

Start with Yourself: The Philosophy of Responsible Leadership

Oleksii’s life credo is simple yet powerful:
“Great responsibility begins with small actions.”
He believes that a culture of trust and integrity starts not with declarations but with everyday behavior — paying taxes honestly, respecting intellectual property, and treating others with dignity.

“If we want to live in a different country, we must first become different people,” he says. His influence is not about slogans but about consistency.
He doesn’t separate business from values because, as he emphasizes, “Leadership without ethics is merely resource management — true leadership begins with the courage to be yourself.”

Oleksii Severyn’s story is more than the story of a single executive. It is proof that humanity, trust, and awareness can redefine what leadership means in Ukrainian business.
From manager to co-owner, from competition to coopetition, from control to partnership — his journey shows that every true transformation starts within.
